Project 13 was to design and build an installation based on the analysis and data of the song, Glory Box by Portishead to represent the experience of sound by the method of folding with the material, plywood.

 

Based on the analysis and data collected, a graph was created which manifested sound into a tangible interaction. Then, different elements of Glory Box were extracted to give it a quantifiable constant.

 

This includes four instrumental graphs with components such as the different types of sound quality, overlaps, beats and loop time. The installation then adapted the site’s environment which was done through the study of circulation, crowd density, sunlight, and rain.

The site is located next to a wall outside food court 1, with the bulk of the human traffic coming to and from the inner design school building with secondary traffic flow from the level 1 outer staircase.

To capture this flow of traffic, we have designed the main circulation of the installation to stem from the inner design school building. On top of this, our installation can also be experienced from the other direction which shows a flow that mimics playing the song backward. People can also enter midway through the installation in which they will be faced with a diversion to mimic entering through a silent bridge in the song.

Lastly, we based the individual panels off the patterns and overlap ratio of the vocal and instruments in glory box. These folding techniques were derived from the original V pleats which were then modified to form different permutations which better represented the three parts of the song. These permutations then adopted the ratio of the instruments and are further mutated to better reflect the song.
